Once upon a time… Four words that introduce thousands of stories; three words that take us back to a time and a place chosen by those who have written them since the dawn of time.

I wanted to invite you to follow me back to the last century, to tell you twelve images. To do so, I climbed into my time machine and headed for the 1940s in the United States. There, I met inspiring, brilliant figures such as Bruce Mozert, the pioneer of underwater photography, who made me want to discover this practice and this era.

He introduced me to his sister Zoé Mozert, who in turn introduced me to Earl Morran, Harry Eckman, not to mention the immense Gil Elvgren. What did they have in common? They all worked for Brown & Bigelow, the largest calendar publisher of the time. They painted pin-ups—sublimely sexy, slightly awkward portrayals of women—hung on walls by the military and adored by advertisers.

It was a different era, of course, but after the pandemic years, I needed something fresh and light. My new project was exactly what I needed. I wanted to bring back that joie de vivre, that carefree spirit, that lightness—through strong, independent women, as beautiful as they are lovable, always a little offbeat.
